Aargh, just finished The Search and it's so good! The Promise was pretty damn awesome too and I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the one and only Toph as nails Melon Lord was going to get a spin-off comic of her own! Having been immersed in the creativity of DiMartino, Konietzko, and Yang, I look forward to adding Hicks to that ridiculously talented roster! Aargh, just finished The Search and it's so good! Toph definitely isn't my favorite character so I was definitely a bit *skeptical* going into this one。 I just find Toph to be abrasive and annoying。Despite all of that, I enjoyed this graphic novel。 It was fun to see Suki and Sokka and the "Secret Tunnel" band again。 It was also fun to watch Toph find more kids to teach and find some more unique earth benders like her。 ☘️🪨🏫 Toph definitely isn't my favorite character so I was definitely a bit *skeptical* going into this one。 I just find Toph to be abrasive and annoying。Despite all of that, I enjoyed this graphic novel。 It was fun to see Suki and Sokka and the "Secret Tunnel" band again。 It was also fun to watch Toph find more kids to teach and find some more unique earth benders like her。 ☘️🪨🏫 。。。more
Daphne,
This was a fun comic with a fun story, though I feel like compared to the Katara comic it was lacking a bit of depth。 It felt shorter to me。 I did enjoy seeing a few more hints at connections between A:TLA and Korra in this comic and I enjoyed seeing more of Toph。 But I read it in about 15 minutes and I doubt I'll reread it a lot。 So a 3 star from me。 This was a fun comic with a fun story, though I feel like compared to the Katara comic it was lacking a bit of depth。 It felt shorter to me。 I did enjoy seeing a few more hints at connections between A:TLA and Korra in this comic and I enjoyed seeing more of Toph。 But I read it in about 15 minutes and I doubt I'll reread it a lot。 So a 3 star from me。 。。。more
Amanda K,
Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC, all opinions are my own。This is a delightful, funny story about Toph finding her way as a teacher and inspiration coming from unexpected places。
Jipi Perreault,
A brief but fun chapter in the life ot the greatest Last Airbender character。
Kelsey,
I LOVED this! I forgot how much I loved Toph。 This was such a great read! Thank you to Dark Horse ( Random House) and Edelweiss+ for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review

Over the course of the book, Toph struggles to grow as a character/leader/teacher/mentor。 What happens when passions turn into comfortable lifestyles and success。I give this book a 4/5。 There's only 80 pages and it's a good story。 A must-read for those fans continuing these stories through the comics。 。。。more
Anyeliz,
I've been looking forward to this ever since I saw it announced, and I was not disappointed。 The entire book is basically just about Toph being bored! It was nice seeing her metalbending academy more developed and getting the first glimpse at her growing interest in law enforcement。 I can't wait to read the next installment in this series, which will be focused on Suki! This edition is a short story about a day in Sifu Toph's life。 It happens somewhere after "The Promise" story arc。Toph seems to have achieved it all in her school for young talents, but it feels like something is still missing。 Along with her former metalbending students, an unprovable musician and some nostalgia about the harshness of her own learning, we will get to see a new way of bending being discovered and Toph might find a new and refreshed purpose for her to follow。As a diehard Avat This edition is a short story about a day in Sifu Toph's life。 It happens somewhere after "The Promise" story arc。Toph seems to have achieved it all in her school for young talents, but it feels like something is still missing。 Along with her former metalbending students, an unprovable musician and some nostalgia about the harshness of her own learning, we will get to see a new way of bending being discovered and Toph might find a new and refreshed purpose for her to follow。As a diehard Avatar fan, I am always in the mood for more background stories。 This one does not disappoint and it is a great addition to the Avatar universe。Great aesthetics, well-written dialogs and coherent character decisions make this arc a good one to keep in mind when deep diving in Aang, Korra and now Toph's amazing universe。------I appreciate Darkhorse and Edelweiss+ kindness for including me in the early release of this ARC。 Although I received this material for free, the content in this review reflects the opinions of my own。Overall rating: 5/5Device used: Adobe PDF Reader on DesktopLanguage: English, advanced level of ESLReader's discretion is advised: no, this is appropriated for all ages 。。。more
Caroline Sheppard,
Toph Beifong’s Metalbending Academy is the second book in the “girls of Avatar” oneshot series, preceded by Katara and the Pirate’s Silver。 The story focuses on Toph, who has grown restless and bored by the same old routine of teaching metalbending to her students day after day。 Toph truly thrives on excitement and action, in which she has been lacking lately。 To make matters worse, she unintentionally breaks up a secret underground earthbending tournament after people feared that she would shut Toph Beifong’s Metalbending Academy is the second book in the “girls of Avatar” oneshot series, preceded by Katara and the Pirate’s Silver。 The story focuses on Toph, who has grown restless and bored by the same old routine of teaching metalbending to her students day after day。 Toph truly thrives on excitement and action, in which she has been lacking lately。 To make matters worse, she unintentionally breaks up a secret underground earthbending tournament after people feared that she would shut them down since she was friends with the Avatar。 As Toph struggles with her new post-war life, she has a heart to heart with a familiar singing nomad and begins to see her school in a new light。All in all, this book is a really fun, heartwarming read。 It was really nice to be able to see Toph get the spotlight with this book, as it’s been a little while since she’s been the center of attention in the Avatar graphic novels。 Faith Erin Hicks’ writing is excellent, she truly nails it with the dialogue and it feels like I can hear the characters’ voices in my head as I read。 Combined with Peter Wartman’s artwork, which just keeps improving with each Avatar book he draws, makes it feel as though you’re watching an episode of the show。 Having oneshot books like this to focus in on certain characters are great additions to the Avatar universe。 Can’t wait for the next book, Suki Alone! 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I thought this was a really fun "episode" in the Avatar world, but it just touches on lavabending and the challenges of teaching someone to control it and then it ends。 It does look into emotional growth once you've settled after lots of adventure, which I thought was nice。 But there could have been more。 I believe this is supposed to be a standalone story, and 80 pages just wasn't enough to build a great story。 I thought this was a really fun "episode" in the Avatar world, but it just touches on lavabending and the challenges of teaching someone to control it and then it ends。 It does look into emotional growth once you've settled after lots of adventure, which I thought was nice。 But there could have been more。 I believe this is supposed to be a standalone story, and 80 pages just wasn't enough to build a great story。 。。。more
Gretchen,
Toph is bored。 After saving the world with the Avatar, she started her metalbending academy to teach earthbenders how to metalbend, but life has gotten a bit monotonous。 After attending the concert of a group fans of the show have seen before, Toph is shocked to feel a new kind of bending that she's never felt before。 She discovers an underground fighting ring, but before she can investigate further the participants scatter because they are afraid Toph will turn them in。 Toph is finally able to Toph is bored。 After saving the world with the Avatar, she started her metalbending academy to teach earthbenders how to metalbend, but life has gotten a bit monotonous。 After attending the concert of a group fans of the show have seen before, Toph is shocked to feel a new kind of bending that she's never felt before。 She discovers an underground fighting ring, but before she can investigate further the participants scatter because they are afraid Toph will turn them in。 Toph is finally able to befriend the new bender and offer him and his friends a place at her academy。 。。。more

This was cute! Toph is one of my favorite characters so being able to see her in action, being a badass, was super fun。 The avatar comics have been bringing me so much joy, and am so happy to have gotten to read this a little bit early!
